join our team at our Waimea research station!

The Agronomy Research Assistant will be responsible for supporting the agronomy
efforts of the Waimea research center with primary focus on agronomic
activities necessary to reliably produce high quality seed for the research
organization. The research assistant will specifically support the Integrated
Pest Management activities in the department. It is expected that the research
assistant will maintain sprayers under optimum conditions for effective and
safe spraying. The research assistant should operate spraying equipment and
should be responsible for worker protection standards (WPS) postings. Ensure
the proper use of PPE (personal protective equipment) at all times and that
label directions are consistently followed. The research assistant should keep
records of chemical use and machine use hours as well as keep record of daily
activities as instructed in the protocols. The IPM assistant will serve as a
backup for netting, land planning and irrigation.





The duties and responsibilities of this role include,
but are not limited to, the following:






+ Performactivities related to the Integrated Pest Management program: Operatespraying machines; Scouting, Hand Weeding, Backpack applications

+ Train newsprayer drivers; perform WPS postings on central notification and at fieldlevel: apply chemicals based on label indications.

+ Maintainchemical inventory and an orderly pesticide storage room. Communicate withsupervisor on spraying activities.

+ Performsprayer equipment cleaning following established protocols, and complywith all regulations and utilize guidance of Environmental ProtectionAgency and Hawaii Department of Agriculture.

+ Conduct allactivities in a safe and legal manner. Maintain all equipment in properand safe working condition. Utilize PPE and make certain that the PPE isused in compliance with chemical labels. Ensure certain chemicals areapplied in accordance with chemical labels.




+ Miscellaneoustasks as assigned by supervisor.


**Qualifications**


**Thefollowing are required** :






+ High School Diplomaor GED

+ 1 to 2 years ofrelated experience or relevant education

+ Validdriver's license




+ Organization and timemanagement skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities

+ Excellentwritten and verbal communication skills and ability to carry out tasks inthe absence of supervision

+ Ability tooperate ATV's, trailers, and tractors

+ Ability to communicate, read, and interpret instructions inEnglish and carry out tasks in the absence of supervision

+ Willing and able to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays during seasonalpeaks

+ Willing and able to work variable shiftschedules depending on spraying time needs

+ Ability towork with others in a team setting and of diverse cultural backgrounds andlanguages



**The following are preferred:**






+ Proficient in theuse of computers with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software

+ Excellent oral andwritten communication skills

+ Proficient in the use of tablets

+ Toleranceand ability to work in an outdoor tropical agriculture setting in variousfield conditions

+ Occasionallyrequired to lift 20 to 40 lbs.
